Word Research: where to look for information on your word
1. Oxford English Dictionary: you will need to use the print (book!) version of the OED to look up the definition of your word. Online versions of the OED require a paid subscription (which Helix does not have).
2. Other dictionaries: use a print dictionary (Dictionary of Slang, Dictionary of Word Origins) or try one of the following...
Online Etymology Dictionary: word origins and histories
American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language
Dictionary.com
3. Subscription Research Database article: use EBSCO, eLibrary, SIRS, or ProQuest to find an article demonstrating the modern use / relevance of your word.
4. Quotation: use a print quotation dictionary, or search online at Bartleby (which will look through several quotation sources at once).
5. Bible: use a print Bible and / or concordance, or search online using Strong's Exhaustive Concordance.
6. Shakespeare: use a print concordance to Shakespeare, or use an online concordance at Open Source Shakespeare.
